Utilizing the Apple CarPlay® & Android Auto™ Software in Your Land Rover

You use your smartphone not just on a daily, but likely on an hourly basis. You use Siri to get directions and monitor traffic conditions. Alexa might be invoked to locate the nearest restaurant or gas station in Huntington, NY. The Land Rover and the Range Rover have been equipped with the technology and software to assist drivers as they traverse life's highway.

What Can these Software Apps Do for You?

Last year, Jaguar began to equip the Land Rover and Range Rover with Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™. However, this was only in certain models of the vehicles. Today, all Range Rovers and Land Rovers will be equipped with the software. You need only to link your smartphone to the software to begin utilizing this essential information.

Typically, Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ offer access to maps and directions, but the software also allows the driver to use one's voice to command the phone to make calls via the infotainment system. Not only can you ask Siri or Alexa to call someone in your contact list, but you can also ask the software to assist you in composing text messages.

Of course, you can also use the voice-activated software to play music or change what's currently playing to a favorite radio station. However, these are just a few perks of utilizing the Apple CarPlay® or Android Auto™ feature.

What are the Required Devices to Utilize this Software?

It really depends on what smartphone or what smart device you'll be utilizing. If you are planning to use Apple CarPlay®, then you can only pair that software to Apple mobile devices, such as the Apple iPhone or an Apple iPad.

Android Auto™ is able to pair with Google phones, such as the Google Pixel. You can also use an LG phone, a Samsung, a Nexus, or any other Android operated smartphone in order to harness Android Auto™ software.

How Do I Set Up the Software?

This will depend upon what type of smartphone you have. However, setting up the software couldn't be easier.

Let's take a look at how to set up Apple CarPlay® first.

1. You'll need an Apple smartphone or mobile device that is able to connect via USB port to the center console of the Land Rover or Range Rover.

2. Your device must be an iPhone 5 or above.

3. Regardless of the device, it must run iOS 7.1 and above software itself.

4. Once you have confirmed you have met this criteria, then you can go to the Land Rover or Range Rover InControl touchscreen and select Apple CarPlay® to pair the device to the vehicle's software.

5. Be sure your Apple device is unlocked and choose "Allow" to launch Apple CarPlay®.

Now, let's see how to activate the software using an Android device.

1. You'll need to download "Android Auto" to your Android-powered smart phone or tablet before proceeding.

2. Connect the smartphone or mobile device via the USB port in the center console of the Land Rover or Range Rover.

3. Use the InControl touchscreen to choose Android Auto, select "Understood" once you have read the disclaimer, and begin using Android Auto™.

Voice Activation

With either of the apps, you can start a "voice session" by pressing the steering wheel voice button (you'll need to hold it down for several seconds) or by using the touchscreen of your device. You can also say "Hey Siri" or "Ok Google," depending upon your smartphone.
